In recent decades, there has been an ongoing increase throughout the world in the importance of physicochemical methods in determining the composition and properties of substances. Gas chromatography today is predominantly capillary chromatography. The year when high-performance gas chromatography was initiated may be taken as 1957, and in that year Golay* proposed to use a new type of column providing much greater performance in separation than with ordinary packed columns. However, the general use of capillary chromatography began in 1979 with the introduction of flexible fused-silica columns. The rapid global progress of this method however has hardly touched the analysis of coal processing products. Since 1971, this journal has published 93 papers on gas chromatography, of which not more than a dozen have been on capillary gas chromatography. Gas chromatography as a method of determining the compositions of pyridine coking and chemical products is at present governed by GOST 28812-90.
