Strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of developmental and behavioral services: implications from Australia.

In this issue of the Journal, Roberts et al report on a prospective audit (the Children Attending Paediatricians Study) of consultant pediatricians who are members of the Australian Paediatric Research Network (APRN). The investigators' findings that developmental-behavioral consultations are common in pediatric office settings, that such consultations are time-consuming and often lead to referrals to ancillary specialists, and that parents of children with developmental-behavioral problems often report worse health than those of children with medical conditions are unlikely to surprise to either general or developmental-behavioral pediatricians in the United States.
