A Systematic Approach for Developing Software Safety Arguments

To demonstrate that a system is acceptably safe to operate, a safety case can be provided for that system. A safety case"...shall consist of a structured argument, supported by a body of evidence, that provides a compelling, comprehensible and valid case that a system is safe for a given application in a given environment" [Ref. 1 ]. For systems that contain software, the safety case must consider the contribution of the software to the safety of the system. Constructing a safely argument requires that safety claims are identified. These safety claims capture the objectives of the safety case.
