Effect of Leather Roller Wear on Lint Output in Roller Gins

Laboratory trials and commercial trials were conducted to find out wear rate of leather rollers and its effect on lint output and to suggest the ginners when to replace the roller in order to make ginning more remunerative. In laboratory trials lint output was measured at different predetermined roller diameters. In commercial trials, the lint outputs for two double roller gins were measured throughout the ginning season periodically. Changes in the roller diameter, lint output, wear rate of roller and percentage reduction in lint output were determined. The monetary loss incurred on additional electricity and wages to make up the shortfall in hourly production due to wear of the rollers which resulted in decrease in lint output was calculated The saving in monetary loss by replacing rollers after 1000 working hours was also calculated. The results obtained in this study would be a good guideline for the ginners to increase their profit by replacing the roller at appropriate time.
