Variation and Character Associations in Segregating Generations of G.arboreum Cotton under Different Mating Systems

Variability studies in segregating generations of two G. arboreum crosses as influenced by different mating systems was studied and compared in F_4 generation. Both the crosses exhibited varied response specific to character and mating system used toadvance the generations. Reduced variabuity observed in both the crosses for some of the characters in the populations advanced through either random intcrmating or open pollination as compared to self pollination could be attributed to linkage disequilibrium. Significant changes in character associations were observed in F_4 population of both intra-arboreum crosses following three mating systems. Such changes are expected if linkages are broken due to recombination. Population raised through selective intermating in Mdl 2562 x PA 141 appears to provide good scope for the recovery of better segregants over the other two mating systems while open and self pollination provided similar advantage in Mdl 2556 x NA 2708.
