In the wet grinding of heavy calcium carbonate used for paper coating in the paper industry, fine particle product is required. It causes increase of energy consumption in the grinding process, therefore an improvement in the grinding efficiency is needed in order to save energy. In this study, some experiments were conducted to evaluate the use of a high-flow recirculation bead mill as a means of improving the grinding efficiency when grinding heavy calcium carbonate. It was found that when heavy calcium carbonate is ground in a high-flow recirculation bead mill, the grinding efficiency can be improved by increasing the input power per unit time if the bead diameter is optimum. In addition, the particle-diameter distribution and slurry viscosity correlate with the median diameter, X_(0.5). However, because the amount of impurities in the slurry derived from the beads also has a correlation with the input power, it was found that to improve the grinding efficiency, it is necessary to consider the wear of the beads when selecting the operating conditions.
