It has been written and implied many times on the pages of this Journal that the Mine Ventilation practitioner is a multi-talented individual. The papers presented in this issue strengthen this argument yet again as the subjects span the mechanics of dust production on truck haul roads in surface operations-and measurement thereof-to the feasibility of using rock as a heat sink for heat rejection purposes in under-ground refrigeration plants. Sandwhiched in-between is the Presidential Address titled "Mine Ventilation Officer to Mine Occupational Hygienist-the Transition". The reader's interest in Henry Morrcroft's analysis of this subject should not be spoilt but it is anticipated that the controversies around this are far from over.The process of defining the competencies for ventilation practitioners at all levels is well on the way under the auspices of the Mine Qualifications Authority (MQA) and once more the complexities and extent across which this profession spans make it difficult to define what we are in one simple title. The Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa is participating in this process to ensure that the identity of the profession is upheld and that the correct standards are applied in designing competencies across the whole spectrum.
