Cervical cancer: the second-generation vaccines move forward.

The quadrivalent human papillomavi-rus (HPV) vaccine is nearly 100% effective at protecting against precan-cerous cervical lesions caused by the HPV types included in the vaccine, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2006. But experts agree that both the quadrivalent vaccine (Gardasil) -and a bivalent vaccine approved in Europe and elsewhere that relies on similar technology (Cervarix)-fall short on two counts: cost and protection against the less common cancer-causing HPV strains.
