An edge-lit backlight unit (BLU) for small portable liquid crystal displays is proposed. In this BLU, a newly designed single pyramid sheet replaces the two orthogonally-placed prism sheets. If the newly designed pyramid sheet is used, the viewing-angle-dependent luminance distribution of the BLU can be improved.
