Multi-phase ac motor drives are now-a-days considered for various applications due to numerous advantages that they offer when compared to their three-phase counterparts. This paper analyses different space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) schemes fora five-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) used for five-phase machine drive. Model of a five-phase VSI is presented in terms of space vectors. The existing technique of utilising only large space vectors are elaborated further in terms of analytical expressions of leg voltages. A method is also presented utilising both large and medium space vectors to obtain sinusoidal output phase voltages. Analytical expressions of leg voltages are developed for both methods. A detailed performance comparison based on simulation and experimental results of different methods is also reported.
