Position measurement is a very important part of any position control system. The measured position is then converted into the required format by signal conditioning using digital or analog systems. When used with rotating platforms, normally a resolver, rotary encoder, hall sensor or simply a potentiometer is used as a position transducer fitted at a location where stator and rotor are connected. All these sensors are divided into two parts; one part is attached to the rotor and the other to the stator. At the same time, the location of the sensor also needs to be fixed in between the stator and rotor. This paper describes the use of a low-cost solid-state gyroscope and an 8-bit microcontroller to measure the position of a rotating platform where the positioning of the sensor needs to be independent of the rotor-stator meeting point or the center of the rotating platform. At the same time the sensor is fitted only on the rotating platform, since there is no need to access the stator (mounting of the rotating platform).
