NEW HOMOLOGOUS SERIES OF AZO ESTER MESOGENS : 4-(4'-N-ALKOXY BENZOYLOXY)-3-METHOXYPHENYL AZO-3'-NITROBENZENES

摘要

Liquid crystals are materials in which mesomorphic properties appear in certain temperature domain. The mesophases can be identified by their individual birefringent textures when viewed under the polarizing microscope with heating stage. Existence of mesomorphic property in a substance is attributed to its molecular geometry and the play of intermolecular forces arising from it. Any minor change on the shape and structure of the molecules might have a major influence upon the type of mesophase and mesomorphic domain.
