This paper brings out a practical scheme of representation and improvement of any hull form based on computer-aided technique. The representation of a ship's hull requires special mathematical formulations because unlike regular geometrical shapes, the hull form is typically of continuously varying curvature in both orthogonal planes in general. The method described here represents the hull shape in terms of a continuous surface using the concept of bi-parametric representation. The mathematical tool used is the B-spline. It has versatility in terms of the flexible 'control handles' it provides. These control handles enable manipulation of the surface to any degree of fineness. Sharp turns such as a water line intersection at the transom or formation of knuckles at required points can all be incorporated. The concept is equally applicable for twin hulls. The feasibility of the programme coded in 'C' language is demonstrated through illustrations on a mono hull and a twin hull.
