Description and Characterization of Typical Soil Monoliths from Salt Affected Areas in Rajasthan

Soil monoliths are useful medium for display and presentation of soil horizons in natural state and show observable soil properties viz., soil colour, structure, mottling, pores, roots, concretions etc. The monolith is commonly employed as a teachingaid at the experimental stations, colleges and universities. Several authors (Lyford 1939; McClure and Converse 1939; Berger and Muckenhirm 1945; Smith and Moodie 1947; Nagabhushana and Sehgal 1995) tried to find out the ways and means of collecting, preparing, storing and display soil monoliths suitable for wide range of viewers including planners, farmers and scientific personnel. The present study was undertaken to describe methodology for collection, preparation and characterization of two soil monoliths from the salt-affected areas of Rajasthan for display and demonstration to users.
