Programmed control of a process with large time lags features certain controllability problems,specially at the junction points of the setpoint ramp.Setpoint tracking performance with feedback,or feedback --feedforward control schemes shows an amount of discrepancy at these 'knee points',that is unacceptable for certain critical applications.This problem has been studied with the Computer Based Programmed Temperature Control of an Electrical Heat Treatment Furnace for Refractory Bricks.Beside the above generic problem,an individual non-linearity of the thyristor regulated heater has made the dynamic compensation more complex.Control system design has been attempted by simulation of the process and the control system by using an in-house developed simulation software called PCSA.An FOPDT type process model,together with the control system is simulated and a number of control algorithms have been tested for closeloop performance.An adaptive strategy is found and attempted on the real system,that rendered satisfactory result.
