In this study, the characteristics of the aerodynamic loads acting on a wind turbine due to gusts during a typhoon are discussed to help specify a clearer definition of wind turbine class S. The unsteady wind conditions during a typhoon were modeled by the gust model mentioned in IEC61400-1. The flow fields around the wind turbine operating in idle mode with unsteady wind speed (gust) and steady wind speed (equal to maximum gust speed) were simulated by the CFD method. According to the simulated results, we observed that the maximum drag during gust is larger than the drag at maximum gust speed, and the variation of drag under gust with respect to time is similar to the variation of the gust acceleration with respect to time. So, the gust acceleration should be one of the main considerations when evaluating the magnitude of the total drag with gust.
