An alternative method to assess efficiency of estrus detection in dairy herds

Poor estrus detection is an important factor that limits reproductive performance on dairy farms. Most dairy farms use artificial insemination, so efficient and accurate estrus detection has a profound influence on reproductive performance; yet, efficiency of estrus detection is < 50% for most US dairy herds. An annual cost of > 300 million dollar has been associated with inadequate detection of estrus in the United States.
