This issue of the Journal of the American Society of Hypertension begins with an excellent review by Drs Burger and Touyz of biomarkers of endothelial cell dysfunction. The discussion of circulating endothelial cells and microparticles provides an excellent background to assimilate new information in this area and also to anticipate new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in the future. Tian and colleagues have examined the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) database to ascertain relationships between leukocytes and cardiovascular disease. They found an association between increased levels of neutrophils and decreased lymphocytes and the subsequent development of renal disease.
