Plastic surgeons' tradition in transplantation medicine in light of composite tissue allotransplantation.

We read with great interest the recent survey on plastic surgeons' attitudes toward facial transplantation as composite tissue allotransplantation. We would like to comment on some issues raised by the authors. The Louisville team performed a thorough and comprehensive analysis of plastic surgeons' risk acceptance in face transplantation. They questioned five groups including facially disfigured individuals, reconstructive surgeons treating them, organ transplant recipients, professionals managing their immunosuppression, and healthy volunteers. Reconstructive surgeons would accept the least amount of risk for a facial tissue allo transplant, followed by transplant specialists, then kidney transplant recipients, then facially disfigured individuals, and finally healthy control volunteers, who would accept the most amount of risk.
