As a result of the recent recession, a substantial fraction of the nation's wealth evaporated. Real estate values plummeted across the country, stock indexes fell from their lofty heights, and the value of the US dollar softened compared with other world currencies. Despite the economic downturn, health insurance companies continue to raise premiums at alarming rates. Health care costs as a percentage of US gross national product are likely to continue to rise out of proportion to overall economic growth during the postre-cession economic recovery.
