The Philippine Coconut Industry: The coconut industry consistently plays an important role in the Philippine economy. Despite modest growth over the years, the industry remains the number one foreign exchange earner in the agriculture sector and the 5th in total merchandise exports of the country, after electronics, garments, mineral products, and machinery. The industry generated USD930 million annually from export in the last two years. Major exports are coconut oil, copra meal, desiccated coconut, oleochemicals, which interestingly are derived from the coconut meat which in turn represents 30% by weight of the coconut. The industry is huge with a mass base of 3.5 million coconut farmers and farm workers all over the archipelago.
