Ammonium iron citrate (C_6H_8O_7? nFe ? nH_3N) was used as a precursor for preparing both iron-oxide thinfilms and nanoparticles. Thin films of iron oxides were fabricated on silicon (111) substrate using asuccessive-ionic-layer-adsorption-and-reaction (SILAR) method and subsequent hydrothermal orfurnace annealing. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the iron-oxide films obtained undervarious annealing conditions show the changes of the micro-scale surface structures and the magneticproperties. Homogenous Fe_3O_4nanoparticles around 4 nm in diameter were synthesized byhydrothermal reduction method at low temperature and investigated using transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM).
