Shellfish restoration in Alaska

The native Village of Eyak is developing techniques to restore populations of the razor clam Siliqua patula populations. The local razor clam fishery was once one of the largest in the world but populations have declined to where they support a minimal recreation and subsistence fishery. The reasons for this decline and the efforts underway to restore these populations will be presented. An update on recent developments in Alaska also will be discussed. Topics will include advances in culture techniques for the native littleneck clam Protothaca staminea and basket cockle Clinocardia nautilli, the promulgation of regulations allowing personal use, shellfish gardening and subsistence shellfish culture, and shellfish sanitation issues surrounding paralytic shellfish poisoning, Vibrio parahemoliticus, and high levels of cadmium.
