Response to Matz's (2008) Comments on Gire and Williams (2007)

MATZ (2008) HAS WRITTEN a response to our article entitled "Dissonance and the Honor System: Extending the Severity of Threat Phenomenon" (Gire & Williams, 2007), The central issue in the critique was that we erroneously used the dissonance framework to explain results indicating that participants from a military school with a severe honor system did not take money they found in a public setting, but most of them took money they found in a private setting. In contrast, participants from a nonmilitary school that did not have as severe an honor system largely took the money regardless of the setting in which it was found. The proposed alternative explanation is that severity of threat rather than dissonance was at work.
