Post-operative rhabdomyolysis in a bilateral immediate DIEP flap breast reconstruction

Post-operative rhabdomyolysis is less commonly reported in plastic and reconstructive surgery, compared with other surgical specialties but is an important complication associated with prolonged surgery.1 We describe a case of rhabdomyolysis developing six hours following bilateral mastectomies and immediate bilateral DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap breast reconstruction.A 46 year old Caucasian woman with bilateral breast cancer was referred to the Plastic Surgery service for immediate breast reconstruction following neoadjuvant chemotherapy and prior to adjuvant radiotherapy. She was 1.59 m tall and weighed 82 kg, giving her a body mass index (BMI) of 32 kg/m.2 She was otherwise fit and well with normal renal function.
