Distal defects of fingers may be the most common injuries in the upper limbs.1 The frequent involvement of the nail influences the choice of surgical approach and makes reconstruction more difficult.2 The usual treatments for fingertip injuries, such as local or island flaps, often lead to nail deficiency and an ugly, fat and clumsy appearance of the wounded finger. Since the hand is always naked and exposed, even if only the fingertip is lost, it presents a very large handicap for the patient. The nail is important for the cosmetic appearance and the role it plays in terms of digital grip.
