Every two years the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association holds a reunion in Baltimore. This year was different because it was not only a reunion but also a celebration of Paul Manson's tenure as chief of plastic surgery and his impending retirement after a third of a century at Hopkins, a period that began in 1976, his first year of residency. Former Hopkins residents and fellows came from as far away as Singapore to join Paul, who was honoured by Hopkins with the presentation of his portrait. Present at the reunion was Milton Edgerton, who was the first of only three plastic surgeons to be chief at Hopkins since 1950. The hubbub was about whether plastic surgery would gain its independence. We had been told that Edgerton's family had agreed to endow a plastic surgery chair named in his honour on one condition - that plastic surgery become an independent department rather than remain a division of surgery.
