Sustaining an upland agricultural labour force in Cumbria: the Fell Farming Traineeship Scheme.

An evaluation is presented of a pilot training project implemented in Cumbria (England, UK) to sustain the upland agricultural labour force. The evaluation shows that the training scheme was valued by farmers and trainees in the industry where succession is an issue. The Fell Farming Traineeship Scheme has allowed the piloting of an initiative, outside the mainstream agricultural education and other funding mechanisms, to address this issue rapidly. Working outside these two frameworks of formal agricultural education and ERDP funding has provided flexibility, appropriate to the hill farming sector in Cumbria..
