Assessing the value of LASIK by patient-reported outcomes using quality of life assessment.

It was pleasing to see Lee et al's report on quality of life outcomes of LASIK in the January/February 2005 issue of the Journal of Refractive Surgery, as patient perception regarding outcome is an important measure that is often not adequately considered. Recently, a number of questionnaires have been published for the quality of life outcome of refractive surgery. Although Lee et al put forth great effort to perform this study, comparison of their instrument to others deserves further discussion, de Boer et al presented a complete set of criteria by which the psychometric properties of vision-related questionnaires could be compared. Although a complete analysis of these criteria is beyond the scope of a letter, the following aspects seem especially pertinent to Lee et al's questionnaire: item reduction, internal consistency, and linearity of scoring.
