IN writing this book, the authors' stated intention was to provide an introduction to statistics and statistical tools for undergraduate engineering students and applied statistics students. The emphasis on application of techniques to real-world problems has led the authors to make some idiosyncratic choices of material to include in the text. While the focus on application of methods is reminiscent of Ellis Ott's (1975) classic Process Quality Control, there are several problems with this book that make it difficult to recommend for its intended purpose. The text begins with two chapters intended to introduce the practice of statistics and to provide an overview of quality control procedures. This material provides some context for the remainder of the text, and sets the conversational tone and emphasis on applications which are prevalent throughout the book.
