Effects of pretreatments with silverthiosulphate and cycloheximide on the senescence and vase life of cut flowers of Narcissus cv. Pheasant's Eye

The effects of pretreating cut Narcissus cv. Pheasant's Eye flowers with silverthiosulphate (STS) or cycloheximide (CHI) before transfer to a holding solution containing sucrose (0.15 M) and 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (0.25 mM) on the senescence and vase life were investigated. STS pretreatment had no effect on the vase life whereas CHI pretreatment significantly prolonged vase life by 4.5 days over that of distilled water controls. CH1 pretreatment significantly inhibited increase of ion leakage from perianth and maintained a higher protein content and effectively delayed the onset of wilting thus significantly enhancing vase life. However, flowers pretreated with CH1 were smaller in size. It is concluded that senescence of Narcissus cv. Pheasant's Eye is ethyleneinsensitive involving loss of membrane integrity and protein degradation.
