摘要

I HAVE DEVOTED this editorial to the landmark Institute of Medicine (TOM) report to assure that we as a specialty are aware of its ramifications. It is imperative that as perianesthesia specialty nurses we ensure our place at the health policy table. Nursing with more than 3 million members, is the largest segment of the health care workforce in the United States. Nurses, who work on the front-lines of patient care, are vital to success in responding to rapidly changing health care settings and an evolving health care system.1 Unfortunately, few have been at the formal policy tables and some current barriers prevent us from an effective response.
