Problems in prevention of preterm birth--regrettable contradictions. A special comment from the Founder of the Journal of Perinatal Medicine.

The Journal of Perinatal Medicine was founded in 1973. Prof. Roberto Caldeyro-Barcia, Prof. Edward Hon and Prof. Stanley James as neonatologist joined me as editors. Our Journal was the very first one in this new medical field and was an important witness of a crucial event, namely that obstetrics underwent a great change, in addition to the care for the mother it also took over the care for the fetus, who became a new patient. The following step was to build up a close cooperation with neonatology and other related disciplines. This was the beginning of the interdisciplinary field of perinatal medicine.
