Seismic-While-Drilling Using a Swept-lmpulse Source

This paper describes a prototype swept-impulse hydraulic tool capable of generating a broadband seismic signal at the bit while drilling.The source was designed to overcome the limitations of drill-bit seismic services by allowing operations with polycrystalline-dia-mond-compact (PDC) bits in inclined wells and in soft formations.The swept-impulse seismic source generated a broadband,high-intensity compression-al-wave (P-wave) signal that can be used for high-resolution seismic profiling and look-ahead imaging while drilling.
