Underbalanced drilling (UBD) is becoming more widley known and accepted because of its benefits, which include limiting formation damage, increasing production rates, and drilling enhancement. However, along with the benefits are the associated higher costs and increased risks. A downhole deployment valve (DDV) has been developed that gives a safer and more economical alternative to tripping during UBD operations. This tool, developed by Weatherford, was recently tested in a multilateral underbalanced well in Louisiana.
