Metal-Seal Roller-Cone Bit Cuts Drilling Costs by 42%

The positive economic impact of a metal bearing seal on roller-cone bits used in conjunction with down-hole motors and steerable systems in an Abu Dhabi onshore field has been dramatic. The metal seal has extended seal/bearing life of rollercone bits significantly and has resulted in more on-bottom drilling time. The bits have been used successfuly to kick off from vertical and drill the 8(1/2)-in. build section at 8 deg to 14 deg/100 ft to the landing point at 90 deg. Drilling costs were reduced 42% per foot.
