Emergency contraception, the bottom line.

Promotion of availability of emergency contraception (EC) and prevention of pregnancy with inclusion of discussions related to abstinence, safe sex, etc, appears to be the "name of the game." That having been said, let's look at the evidence-based information. Interesting work from Mexico reported by Lopez-Amoros and colleagues has shed light on the subject. A questionnaire was administered to 14-18-year- olds, to which 390 of 1300 invitees responded. It is interesting to note that 28% of the adolescent females used "emergency contraception." These researchers also noted an association of alcohol abuse and frequency of sexual activity in this age group. The bottom line proved to be "awareness and preventive strategies" is what we as health care providers "must provide."
