For decades, scientists have bred genetically altered mice whose off spring have inherited their parents'A modifications. For the first time,however, researchers have produced morethan one generation of transgenic pri-mates. Now it is hoped that the geneticengineering inroads that achieved thismilestone will help breed primates withhard-to-treat neurodegenerative diseasessuch as Parkinson's and amyotrophic lat-eral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig'sdisease, so that scientists can gain a betterunderstanding of the human diseaseprocess.
