Neonatal necrotising fasciitis following superficial skin infection with community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

A 9-day-old aboriginal boy presented to a hospital with a 24-h history of poor feeding, vomiting, constipation and abdominal distension. The day prior to admission he was noted to have scrotal swelling and peri-umbilical redness. He was born outside of a hospital at 37 weeks gestation via normal vaginal delivery weighing 2.96 kg. At 5 days of age, he was diagnosed with folliculitis of the face and trunk, and treated with topical chlo-rhexidine and Betadine (Purdue Products, Stamford, CT, USA). A swab of the lesions grew a community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) sensitive to erythro-mycin and clindamycin. The child's father also had skin lesions present at this time that were subsequently swabbed and grew a CA-MRSA.
