Four- and five-coordinate platinum in tris[chlorotris(dimethyl sulfide)platinum(II)] pentakis(trichlorostannyl)platinate(II) from an SnCl2 insertion into a Pt-Cl bond

cis, trans-Dichlorobis(dimethyl sulfide)platinum(II) reacts with two molar equivalents of stannous chloride dihydrate to form tris[chlorotris(dimethyl sulfide)platinum(II)] pentakis (trichlorostannyl)platinate(II), [PtCl(SMe2)(3)](3)[Pt(SnCl3)(5)]. The platinum atom in the cation shows square planar coordination whereas that in anion shows trigonal bipyramidal coordination. In solution, the compound dissociates into [PtCl(SMe2)(3)][SnCl3] and [PtCl(SMe2)(3)](2)[SnCl4]. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
