The temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time of N-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance was determined to study the structural phase transition in K2Hg(CN)(4). An increase of the relaxation rate which is attributable to the softening of a lattice mode was observed when the temperature approaches the transition point T-c = 109 +/- 1 K from the high-temperature side. However, no anomaly in the relaxation rate was observed below T-c. A small but definite hysteresis was observed in the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency indicating that this phase transition is first order. [References: 12]
