APPA letter in response to 'FMCSA's medical review board: Five years of progress in commercial driver medical examinations'

On behalf of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), I take exception to statements made in the article, "FMCSA's Medical Review Board: Five Years of Progress in Commercial Driver Medical Examinations," in the April issue of Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Specifically, I disagree with the authors' perspective that only medical examiners with an MD or DO credential should be allowed to perform commercial driver medical examinations for drivers with specific diagnosed conditions, multiple health conditions, or both. The article further states that "only relatively uncomplicated examinations" should be performed by physician assistants (PAs).
