Economic analysis of yield gaps and constraints inoilseeds production in North Eastern Dry Zone of Karnataka

The studies on yield gap and constraints analysis in groundnut and sunflower were carried out considering four years data from 1991-92 to 1994-95 (rabi/summer seasons) in North Eastern Dry Zone (Zone-2) of Karnataka state. The results indicated thatthe yield gap-1 (research gap) was found to be very substantial both in groundnut (67.15 percent) and sunflower (54.52 percent) mainly due to environmental differences, non-transferable technology, extent of resource use, etc. The yield gap-II (extension gap) in groundnut (32.85 percent) and sunflower (45.48 percent) was also found to be considerable, may be due to agro-biological and socio-economic constraints in production. The yield gap-III (attainable potential yield gap) has clearly indicated thatthe farmers have harvested only about 65 and 78 per cent of attainable potential yield of groundnut and sunflower, respectively. Therefore, in order to reduce the yield gap arising out of various agro-biological and socio-economic constraints identifiedand documented, strengthening of institutional network for provision of inputs and technical knowhow is suggested.
