Management of Potato Seed Tuber Rot During Plant Emergence in Southern Transitional Zone of Karnataka

Seed tuber rot or seed piece decay during plant emergence is the major constraint to potato production in the southern transitional zone of Karnataka. Field experiments were conducted during 2003-2006 at Madenur in Hassan district of Karnataka to assess the effect of potato seed tuber treatment with fungicides and bio agmt-Trichoderma viride against seed tuber rot or seed piece decay during plant emergence. A combination treatment of seed tubers with mancozeb @ 0.2% and carbendazim @ 0.2% reduced seed tuber rot or decay as indicated by the highest plant emergence compared to un-treated control. Plant emergence was marginally higher from seed tubers which were treated with T. viride. Comparatively a higher levelof plant emergence was recorded in thesecond date of planting after sufficient rainfall as practiced by local fanners than in the first date of planting during early monsoon showers in all the four years tested. These results are discussed in relation to variation in soil temperatures between the first and the second dates of planting and the best management practices need to be adopted to achieve maximum plant emergence from potato seed tubers/seed pieces is recommended.
