Three different substrates viz., wheat straw (WS), maize cob straw (MCS), lentil straw (LS) alone or WS in combination with MCS and LS in 1:2, 1:1 & 2:1 ratios and nine organic supplements viz., wheat bran, rice bran, corn meal, soybean meal, groundnut cake, pigeonpea powder, lentil powder, mustard cake and neem cake were evaluated for the yield performance and biological efficiency (BE) of four species of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.). Substrate combination of WS+LS (2:1) took minimum time for spawn run of all tested Pleurotus spp. and gave highest yield of P. sajor caju (572.8 g with 57.3% BE) followed by P. florida (554.2 g with 55.4% BE). While WS+LS (1:1) substrate combination showed maximum yield for P. flabellatus (554.1 g with 55.4% BE) and P. sapidus (583.3 g with 58.3% BE). Maximum weight per fruiting body of P. sajor caju (7.9 g), P. florida (10.6 g) and P. sapidus (10.6 g) was found in WS+LS (1:1) substrate combination while FFS+LS (1:2) combination gave maximum weight per fruiting body in P. flabellatus (10.0 g). MCS alone proved to be a poor substrate, but performed better in combination with WS for the yield of all four species. Supplementation with soybean meal resulted in the highest yield and maximum average weight per fruit body in P. sajor caju, P. florida and P. sapidus, while lentil powder supplement was better for P. flabellatus.
