Availability of power is the essential input and key infrastructure for economic development and improving quality of life in any country. Rapid industrialization coupled with modernization of the agricultural sector has pushed up demand for power. In spite of continued thrust given by the Government of India to reduce the gap between demand and power supply availability the deficit persists. A number of measures has been initiated to reform power sector with a view to enhance and streamline availability of power. The installed capacity in India has increased from 1737 MW in 1950 to 85,132 MW in 2002 and the current capacity is hovering around 1,24,000 MW. But out of this only 80 percent is available for generation at a given time resulting in shortages.
