Evidence-based guideline recommendations on the use of positron emission tomography imaging in head and neck cancer from ontario and guidelines in general-some observations

In a linked paper, John Yoo and colleagues [1 ] detail the current Ontario guidelines on the appropriate use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (PET/CT) in head and neck cancer. The guidelines were developed as part of the Ontario Programme of Evidence Based Care to improve cancer outcomes, assist practitioners apply best available research evidence to clinical decisions and promote responsible use of health care resources in Ontario. In summary, the authors drafted the recommendations by updating the systematic reviews published by Facey and colleagues [2] to July 2011. The recommendations were reviewed by the Ontario provincial Head and Neck Disease Site Group and by a special meeting of experts. Following adaptations agreed at the meeting, the recommendations were accepted as consensus guidelines on the use of FDG PET/CT in head and neck cancer for Ontario.
