Pepper Varieties in the News: New Ornamental Peppers Heading to Market

Ornamental plant enthusiasts now have more pepper variet-ies to add to their gardens. The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has entered into a license agreement with McCorkle Nurseries, in Dearing, Ga., for propagation and distribution of these eyecatching peppers. The new plants, "Midnight Creeper" and "Solar Eclipse," are the latest in a line of ornamental pepper varieties released by ARS. They were created by geneticist John Stommel of the ARS Genetic Improvement of Fruits and Vegetables Laboratory and Rob Griesbach, a former researcher with the ARS Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit, both in Beltsville, Md.
