TEXTILES RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT IN CANADA

Canada's textile exports were valued at over $2 billion in 2008 with a workforce of over 26,000 people.1 As the competitive advantage of textile sectors in industrialized nations continues to be affected by the global trade environment, the Canadian textile industry adopted a proactive stance by developing a technology roadmap. In June 2008, the Technology Roadmap (TRM) for the Canadian textile industry was released after 11 months of consultation and the involvement of about 120 people in 80 companies and organizations. This strategic planning process was intended to "identify and prioritize the technologies needed to support strategic R&D. marketing and investment decisions".2 Four growth areas for the Canadian technical textiles sector stood out: protection medical, transportation, and building/construction applications. In addition, innovation and partnership appeared as key success factors.
