Efficient coal-fired units key to lowering CO2: EPA white paper

Absent commercially available carbon capture and storage technologies, the US Environmental Protection Agency is emphasizing that existing coal-fired power plants use the “the most efficient” technologies to generate and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. EPA's sector policies and programs division under the Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards wrote the white paper, which summarizes the currently available technologies to reduce GHGs. It was released November 10 along with EPA's regulatory guidance for federal, state, local and tribal permit writers. The guidance is aimed at helping permit writers assess best available control technologies to reduce GHGs at existing and new coal-fired power plants to comply with the GHG permitting rule, which takes effect January 2011.
